Permanent Lip Fillers and Silicone: Why I Don’t Recommend Them?
16/09/2026How Many Days Does It Take for Lip Fillers to Settle?
Almost everyone who steps out of the procedure and looks in the mirror thinks the same thing: “Will it stay like this?” The short answer is no. What you see at first isn’t the final result—it’s the beginning of the healing process.
In this article, I describe the recovery process after lip fillers day by day: what happens in the first few hours, when the swelling goes down, and when it’s appropriate to assess the final result. For the procedure itself and planning the dosage: How many ml is a lip filler? You can take a look at my post.
Short answer: two weeks
It usually takes about two weeks for lip fillers to settle completely. Most of the final look becomes apparent within the first three to five days, but it takes a little longer for the tissue to soften completely and for the filler to integrate with the surrounding tissue.
So don't make a decision based on the photos taken in the first few days. The right time to evaluate is at the end of the second week.
The First 24 Hours: The Most Dramatic Scene
The fullness you notice on the first day is caused more by swelling than by the amount of filler injected. The lips are one of the areas of the body with the densest network of blood vessels; they react quickly and noticeably to the needle insertion.
Mild asymmetry is also normal during this period; both sides do not always swell at the same rate. The asymmetry on the first day usually resolves on its own. For the progression of the swelling, Swelling after lip fillers you can take a look at my article.
Days 2–3: Peak and decline of swelling
For most people, the swelling reaches its peak toward the end of the second day and then begins to subside. This does not mean that something has gone wrong; it is simply the natural course of the inflammatory response.
Cold therapy can be helpful these days, but don’t let the ice come into direct contact with your skin; apply it through a thin cloth at short intervals. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated also reduces morning swelling.
Days 4–7: The image becomes clearer
Toward the end of the first week, most of the swelling subsides and the lip begins to take on its natural shape. Most of my patients feel more comfortable during this time.
At this stage, you may feel small lumps. These are usually caused by the filler not having fully spread yet and will soften over time. For irregularities that become permanent, lip filler clumping There is detailed information in my post.
Week 2: Final Results
Hyaluronic acid fillers gain volume by drawing water from the surrounding tissue and integrate with the tissue fibers. This process is called tissue integration and is typically completed within two weeks.
The decision on touch-ups is also made at this point. Adding volume too early can result in excessive volume because it is applied to an area that hasn’t yet settled. That’s why I schedule the follow-up appointment for the second week at my clinic.
Can you use Vaseline after lip fillers?
We get this question very often. After the procedure, you may experience dryness and slight flaking on your lips; moisturizing can provide relief during this time.
A thick moisturizer, such as petroleum jelly, reduces moisture loss by forming a protective barrier over the surface of the lips. However, keep two rules in mind: Avoid applying the product to the area for the first 24 hours, as the injection sites have not yet healed, and do not press or rub the area when applying it. It’s safer to apply it gently with a clean cotton swab rather than with your finger.
What affects the residence period?
The duration varies from person to person. As the amount administered increases, the cost also increases, and the process may take longer. Swelling is more noticeable in people with thin lip tissue.
Medications and supplements that thin the blood, certain pain relievers, alcohol, and strenuous exercise can increase bruising and swelling. For post-procedure guidelines, Things to consider after filling I recommend that you read my article.
What Helps and What Doesn't Help Reduce Swelling
Here’s a short list of helpful tips: applying cold compresses (through a thin cloth, at short intervals), sleeping with your head elevated, drinking plenty of water, and reducing salt intake during the first few days.
The following are ineffective and may even be harmful: rubbing or massaging the lips, hot showers and saunas, strenuous exercise in the first few days, and alcohol consumption. What these have in common is that they dilate blood vessels or apply mechanical pressure to the filler.
When Can I Exercise? Can I Fly?
It is generally recommended to wait the first 24–48 hours before engaging in strenuous exercise. Since exercise increases blood pressure and circulation, it raises the risk of swelling and bruising. Light activities, such as walking, do not cause any problems starting on the first day.
Air travel is another frequently asked-about topic. Changes in cabin pressure can cause some swelling; therefore, if possible, it’s more comfortable to avoid long flights during the first few days. This is not a medical restriction, but a comfort recommendation.
Timing the Day Before a Special Occasion
If you're planning a wedding, engagement, or an important photo shoot, don't wait until the last week to get it done.
The safest plan is to schedule it at least two, preferably three, weeks in advance. This way, any swelling will have completely subsided, and minor touch-ups can be made during the second-week follow-up if necessary. Scheduling the procedure at the last minute will, at best, leave you looking puffy on the day of the event.
When Can You Trust Photos?
My clients usually take photos right after the procedure and send them to their loved ones, and the reactions they receive only increase their anxiety.
A photo taken on the first day is not representative of the results. If you want to make a comparison, take a photo before the procedure, and then take another one at the end of the second week under the same lighting and from the same angle. Two photos taken under different lighting and from different angles compare the lighting, not the actual change.

When Should You See a Doctor?
The course of events I described above describes a normal recovery. However, certain signs that deviate from this do not call for waiting but require you to contact us the same day.
Severe and progressively worsening pain, a sensation of coldness accompanied by whitening or bluish discoloration of the lip, noticeable unilateral discoloration, or swelling that worsens with a fever are among these signs. These are rare, but early intervention can make all the difference. At my clinic, I provide every patient with a post-procedure contact number; if you have any concerns, you are expected—and it is the right thing to do—to call.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days does it take for lip fillers to settle?
Most of the swelling subsides within the first three to five days, though it usually takes about two weeks for the swelling to completely subside. You should wait until the end of the second week to assess the final result.
Why does it look so bloated on the first day?
The fullness on the first day is largely due to swelling rather than the filler itself. Because the lips have a dense network of blood vessels, they react quickly and noticeably to the needle insertion.
When is the swelling at its worst?
In most people, it peaks toward the end of the second day and then begins to subside. This is the natural course of the inflammatory response.
Can I apply Vaseline after lip fillers?
You can apply it; it provides relief during periods of dryness and flaking. However, avoid applying the product to the area for the first 24 hours, as the injection sites have not yet closed; after that, apply it gently—preferably with a clean cotton swab—without pressing down.
The two sides look different—is that normal?
Mild asymmetry is normal in the early days; both sides do not always swell at the same rate. This usually resolves on its own. If there is persistent asymmetry, it will be evaluated during the follow-up visit in the second week.
When should touch-ups be done?
This should not be done before the second week. Adding elements to an image that hasn't fully taken shape yet can result in excessive volume.
