Do you have a redness on your face that appears suddenly in a hot environment, when you get excited or when you eat a spicy food and becomes permanent over time? Do you see spider web-like thin veins on your cheeks? If your answer is yes, you may have what is popularly known as "Rose Disease". Rosacea you may be living with.
What is Rosacea? Not Just "Sensitive Skin"
Rosacea is an inflammatory disease that affects the middle part of the face (nose, cheeks, forehead and chin) and progresses in attacks. It usually starts in fair-skinned people after the age of 30. It is not just a rash; in later stages, it can lead to acne-like bumps (acne rosacea), eye involvement and thickening of the nasal tissue (rhinophyma). Early intervention is therefore critical to stop the disease from progressing.
Rosacea (Rose Disease) Treatment with Medical Aesthetics
Rosacea is not only an aesthetic concern, but also a chronic skin disease that reduces the quality of life and damages social self-confidence. Our patients usually apply to our clinic with the complaint “My face burns no matter what I apply”. The good news is that although Rosacea cannot be completely “eradicated”, it can be successfully “controlled” with modern medical aesthetic technologies and its symptoms can be suppressed for a long time. As Dr. Melis Ülger, Istanbul, Kadikoy‘I would like to explain in detail the special treatment protocols we apply for sensitive and reactive skin and how we deal with this stubborn redness.
Why Is Our Face Always Red? Vascular Mechanism
The main problem with rosacea skin is that the vessels are over-reactive. In normal skin, the vessels dilate (the face turns red) and then return to their original shape. However, in skin with Rosacea, the “elasticity” of the vessels is impaired. The dilated vessels cannot contract and remain suspended on the surface. This causes permanent redness (erythema) and capillary breaks (telangiectasia). In addition, the skin barrier is weak; it is vulnerable to external factors.
The Most Effective Rosacea Treatment Methods in Medical Aesthetics
Creams and medications are part of the treatment, but energy-based devices are needed to physically destroy the enlarged veins.
1. BBL Hero and Laser Treatments: Light Power Targeting Vessels
The gold standard of rosacea treatment is light systems. BBL (BroadBand Light) or Nd:YAG lasers target the hemoglobin (redness) in the blood. The light energy sent into the skin is absorbed by the dilated capillaries and converted into heat. This heat “glues” the vessel walls in a controlled manner (coagulation). The dysfunctional vessel is absorbed and destroyed by the body. The result is lightened skin, reduced redness and a smoother tone.
2. Golden Needle (Scarlet X): Thickening the Skin Barrier
Skin with rosacea is usually very thin and the veins are very close to the surface. Scarlet X (Golden Needle) radiofrequency energy triggers new collagen production in the dermis layer of the skin. As the skin quality improves and the skin thickens, the underlying veins become less visible. Radiofrequency also has the effect of reducing inflammation.
3. Rosacea Mesotherapy: Cocktails that put out the fire
To extinguish skin inflammation from the inside Mesotherapy is applied. Specially prepared cocktails for rosacea include:
- Vitamin C: It strengthens the vascular walls.
- Salmon DNA (Polynucleotides): Accelerates cell repair and reduces inflammation.
- Tranexamic Acid It is one of the most powerful agents to suppress redness.
- Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizes the skin and repairs the barrier.
4. Micro-Botox: Suppressing Neurogenic Redness
Classic Botox While it is done to the muscles, the “Micro-Botox” technique is done in very diluted doses into the skin. This blocks the nerve signals (acetylcholine) that cause the vessels to dilate. This significantly reduces “flushing” attacks.
Managing "Triggers" in the Treatment Process
No matter what we do in the clinic, if the patient does not manage their “triggers”, the disease will relapse. The factors that exacerbate rosacea are:
- Sunlight (the greatest enemy).
- Extremely hot and spicy food.
- Alcohol (especially red wine).
- Hot bath, hammam, sauna.
- Stress.
Skin Care for Rosacea Sufferers: What Never to Do
Caring for a skin with rosacea should be “minimalist”.
- Never: Do not use granular peels, scrubs, hard brushes, alcohol-containing tonics, burning agents such as menthol, eucalyptus.
- Absolutely: Use perfume-free, non-foaming cleansers (in cream form) and barrier-repairing moisturizers (containing ceramides).
- Sun Protection: Instead of chemical filters, choose sunscreens with “mineral filters” (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) that do not burn the skin.
About what to look out for in skin care American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) also emphasizes the importance of gentle products and avoiding the sun.
Nutrition and Rosacea: The Gut-Skin Axis
Recent studies show a strong link between Rosacea and gut health (microbiota). According to the “Gut-Skin Axis” theory, inflammation in the gut is reflected on the skin. Eating a probiotic-rich diet and avoiding sugar and processed foods can reduce the severity of attacks.
