Hyaluronic Acid (HA), the main ingredient of dermal fillers, is an essential molecule found naturally in our body that provides moisture, elasticity and youthfulness of the skin. What is Skin Quality and Why Does It Deteriorate?

“The term ”skin quality" is the sum of four key parameters that define the health and appearance of the skin:

Smoothness The texture of the skin surface, the condition of the pores and the presence of fine lines.
Firmness (Elasticity): Tautness of the skin and the ability to bounce back when pulled.
Moisture (Hydration): Water retention capacity and fullness of the skin.
Shine The skin's ability to reflect light and uniformity of color tone.

Sun damage, smoking, stress and the natural aging process break down collagen and elastin fibers in the dermis layer of the skin, causing these parameters to deteriorate. Dermal fillers target this damaged dermis layer and restore its quality.

How Do Dermal Fillers Improve Skin Quality? Scientific Mechanisms

There are three basic mechanisms underlying the improvement of skin quality by fillers:

1. Deep Hydration: Filling the Skin's Water Reserves

The most well-known feature of hyaluronic acid is that it can hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water. The filler injected under the skin attracts the surrounding water molecules and creates a “moisture reservoir” in the deep layers of the skin. This intense hydration makes the skin look fuller, brighter and more vibrant. Moisturized skin becomes more resistant to fine wrinkles (e.g. “accordion lines” on the cheeks).

2. Biostimulation: Order to Produce Your Own Collagen (Neocollagenesis)

This is the most fascinating effect of fillers. Hyaluronic acid placed under the skin stimulates “fibroblast” cells that produce the building blocks of the skin.
