25/12/2025Can You Do Facial Yoga After Botox? Scientific Facts and Risks
With the rise of natural beauty trends in recent years, "Face Yoga" has become very popular on social media and beauty blogs. Many people aim to recover sagging and look younger by exercising their facial muscles. However, the same people use the most powerful weapon of medical aesthetics for faster and more precise results. Botox and it does not give up its practice.
Can I Do Facial Yoga After Botox?
But can these two methods be used together? Does doing facial yoga after Botox improve the result or, on the contrary, lead to disaster? As Dr. Melis Ülger, Istanbul, Kadikoy‘This is one of the most common questions I hear from my patients in my clinic in Istanbul, Turkey. In this article, in the light of facial anatomy and the pharmacology of Botox, I will explain in detail why these two opposite methods should not be applied at the same time and the possible risks.
Two Different Philosophies: How Botox and Facial Yoga Work
In order to answer this question, we first need to understand how the working principles of these two methods are similar. opposite that there is a difference between the two. One says “stop”, the other “run” he says.
Botox Resting and Freezing the Muscle (Relaxation)
Botox (Botulinum Toxin) temporarily blocks the “contract” command from the nerve endings to the muscles. Its purpose is to put the muscles that work for years and wrinkle the skin (for example, the frowning muscle) on forced leave. When the muscle relaxes, the skin over it flattens and the wrinkle opens. The philosophy of Botox is based on “immobility and smoothness”.
Facial Yoga: Working and Growing Muscle (Activation)
Facial yoga, on the contrary, aims to train the facial muscles (mimic muscles) with intense and repetitive movements (resistance exercises). As in bodybuilding, it aims to increase the volume of facial muscles (hypertrophy) to fill the skin from the inside and prevent sagging. Its philosophy is based on “movement and volume”.
Therefore, getting Botox and then doing facial yoga is like stepping on the gas at the same time as stepping on the brakes. This both tires the engine and prevents the vehicle from moving forward.
Facial Yoga Immediately After the Procedure: Why It's a "Big Mistake"
The first 2 weeks after Botox application, especially the first 24-48 hours, is the most critical period for the success and safety of the treatment. Doing facial yoga during this period carries serious medical risks.
Risk of Toxin Displacement (Migration)
Botox is a drug injected in liquid form. After it is injected, it takes a certain amount of time to bind to the receptors in the muscle. If you do facial yoga immediately after the procedure and move that area intensely, massage it or bend and get up, the drug may spread to the surrounding tissues before it binds. The drug that your physician puts with a millimeter calculation may shift to an untargeted muscle.
Undesirable Side Effects: Eyelid drooping (ptosis)
The most feared consequence of migration is “droopy eyelid”. For example, if Botox injected between the eyebrows (glabella) leaks into the muscle that lifts the eyelid (levator palpebrae) with intense facial exercise or rubbing, that muscle is paralyzed and your eyelid drops. This can take months to recover. For this reason, facial yoga, massage and movements that compress the face are strictly prohibited in the first days.
Does It Make Sense to Exercise After the Botox Effect Starts?
Let's say 2 weeks have passed, your botox has settled and the risky period is over. Can you do facial yoga now? You can, but you should not. Here are the reasons:
"Tug of War" Game: Shortening the Impact Time
While Botox is trying to stop the muscle, if you try to force that muscle to work with facial yoga, the development of new nerve endings in your body accelerates (nerve sprouting). Active and strained muscles recover faster from the effect of botox. Botox effect, which normally lasts 4-6 months, can be reduced to 2-3 months with intense facial exercises. In other words, facial yoga “devours” your botox.
Metabolic Rate and Botox Lifespan
Facial yoga increases blood circulation and metabolism in the area. Although increased blood circulation is good for overall skin health, it causes botox molecules to be eliminated from the body faster. If you do not want to shorten the life of your aesthetic investment, you should leave the botoxed areas (forehead, around the eyes) alone.
Exceptional cases where facial yoga can be beneficial
Botox and facial yoga are not completely enemies; it's just a matter of timing.
As the Botox effect wears off (Months 4-6)
After the 4th month, when the effect of Botox decreases and muscle movements start to return, light facial exercises can be performed. Some argue that controlled exercises performed during this period can prevent excessive weakening (atrophy) of the muscle that has been immobilized for a long time. However, this is a short interval until you have Botox again.
Operate Non-Application Zones
Botox is usually applied to the upper part of the face (forehead, around the eyes). Facial yoga is generally effective for the lower part of the face (cheeks, jowl, jawline). If you only have Botox on your upper face, there is no harm in doing facial yoga for your lower face (jawline, double chin). However, you should make sure that the movements do not affect the upper face.
A Misconceived Myth: "Does Facial Yoga Replace Botox?"
Another frequently asked question is: “Will my wrinkles go away if I do facial yoga instead of Botox?” The answer is unfortunately no, and in some cases it may even be worse.
- Dynamic Wrinkles: Forehead lines and crow's feet are caused by “repetitive muscle movements”. Since facial yoga repeats these movements, it can deepen existing lines. To open the wrinkle, you need to relax the muscle, not work it harder.
- Sagging Facial yoga can provide fullness in mild sagging by increasing muscle volume, but it cannot have the “smoothing” effect of Botox.
