Things to Consider After Botox: Your Step-by-Step Guide
You have successfully completed your Botox treatment and now it is time to enjoy the fresh, rested and luminous expression that will settle on your face... However, during this pleasant wait, you need to play an active role to ensure the perfection and safety of your treatment outcome. Botox aftercare is not a complicated or challenging process; on the contrary, it requires following a few simple but extremely important rules. These rules are designed to ensure that the medication works most effectively in the targeted muscles and to prevent unwanted side effects.
Things to Consider After Botox: Your Step-by-Step Guide
Dr. Melis Ulger, Istanbul, Kadikoy‘I have gathered these “golden rules”, which I explain in detail to each patient in my clinic in Istanbul, in this guide to be your road map after Botox.
Why is Botox Aftercare so Important for the Success of the Treatment?
Understanding the mechanism of action of Botox also helps to understand the importance of aftercare. Botox is a protein that temporarily blocks the communication between the injected muscle and the nerve that gives the command to “contract”. After the application, a certain period of time is needed for this protein to settle in the targeted muscle tissue and bind to the nerve receptors. In those first critical hours and days, what you do or don't do can affect the placement of this protein. The goal is simple: To ensure that Botox stays only in the targeted muscles and to prevent its spread (migration) to the surrounding muscles. Following the right care rules ensures that the treatment works exactly as planned, your expression remains natural and unwanted side effects such as eyebrow drooping are avoided.
Gold Watches: First 4-6 Hours After Trading
This is the most critical time period for the placement of Botox.
STAND STRAIGHT Avoid Leaning Forward and Lying Down
Take care to stay in an upright position for the first 4-6 hours after the procedure. Avoid activities that require you to lie down, sleep or tilt your head forward for a long time (such as yoga, tying your shoes, bending down to pick something up). The purpose of this rule is to prevent the Botox from sliding out of the targeted muscles, such as the muscles that move the eyelid, due to the effect of gravity. This is the most important step to prevent complications such as droopy eyebrows or eyelids.
DO NOT TOUCH Massage, Scrubbing and Pressure Prohibited
Never massage, rub hard or apply pressure on the treated areas (forehead, between the eyebrows, around the eyes). You should be gentle even when washing your face. Face down massages, wearing tight hats or helmets are also actions to be avoided during this period. Mechanical pressure can physically push the injected Botox into unwanted areas.
MAKE MIMICS Gentle Facial Movements Are Beneficial
Although this rule may be surprising to many, it has a scientific basis. During the first 1-2 hours after the procedure, it is beneficial to gently exercise the treated muscles (such as frowning, squinting, smiling). These voluntary muscle movements can help the muscles to “absorb” the botox protein more quickly and effectively by increasing blood circulation and better binding to nerve receptors. However, care should be taken that these movements are not exaggerated and forceful.
Your First Day 24 Hours After Treatment
After the first critical hours have passed, there are a few more simple rules to follow.
Avoid Intense Exercise and Sports
Avoid intense exercise that increases blood pressure and heart rate (running, fitness, heavy lifting, etc.) for the first 24 hours after the procedure. Increased blood circulation can increase the risk of bruising at the injection sites and theoretically cause some dispersion of Botox from the targeted area.
Avoid Alcohol Consumption
Alcohol has the ability to dilate blood vessels (vasodilation). Drinking alcohol within the first 24 hours after the procedure may increase the likelihood of small bruises at the needle entry sites.
Protect yourself from excessive heat: Sauna, Hammam and Hot Shower
Intense heat also dilates the blood vessels. Therefore, it is important to avoid extremely hot environments such as sauna, Turkish bath, steam room and showering with very hot water in the first day after the procedure to reduce the risk of bruising.
Skin Care Be Gentle
On the day of the procedure, do not apply products that abrade the skin such as peels and scrubs on your face. Postpone facial massage or other skin care procedures (such as Hydrafacial) for at least a few days. You can clean your skin with a gentle cleanser and apply your moisturizer.
Long Term Care and Optimizing Results
Post-Botox care is not limited to the first 24 hours. It is important to take care of your overall skin health to maintain the fresh and smooth look you have achieved for longer. Regularly moisturizing your skin every day and, most importantly, using a high-factor sunscreen will complement the effects of Botox and slow down the aging process of your skin.
Possible Side Effects After Botox and When Should You Call Your Doctor?
Botox is an extremely safe procedure when applied by a specialist physician. Side effects are usually mild and temporary.
- Normal and Temporary Effects: A slight redness, small swelling or, rarely, bruises the size of a pinhead may appear at the injection points. These disappear spontaneously within a few hours or days. Some people may also experience a mild headache after the procedure.
- Situations in which a doctor should be consulted: Although extremely rare, if you notice eyebrow or eyelid drooping (ptosis), asymmetry or double vision, you should contact your practitioner immediately. Such effects are almost always temporary and usually resolve within 1-2 months, but require a medical check-up. Preventing such side effects once again emphasizes the importance of choosing the right physician. About the risks and benefits of treatment, Organizations such as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) also states that patients need to be aware.
