Technology 2: Radiofrequency (RF) - Restructuring the Dermis
Radiofrequency is a technology that uses radio waves to heat the deeper layers of the skin in a controlled way, without damaging the surface.
How Radiofrequency Works (Dermal Heating)
Unlike laser, Radiofrequency (RF) is “color-blind”. This means it does not target melanin. This makes it an extremely safe option for all skin colors, including dark skin types. When RF energy is applied to the dermis layer of the skin, it is converted into heat due to the electrical resistance of the tissue. This controlled heat (usually 40-45°C) creates two main effects:
- Instant Tightening: It causes the existing collagen fibers to contract and contract instantly, which gives the skin a temporary firmness.
- Long-term Collagen Production (Neocollagenesis): This is the main and lasting effect. The heat stimulates collagen producing cells called fibroblasts. The body perceives this heat as “damage” and starts an intensive repair process in the area over the next 3-6 months, producing new, strong collagen and elastin fibers.
Uses of RF in Medical Aesthetics
- Face and Neck Tightening: It is effective in lifting sagging cheeks, jowl area and jawline sagging.
- Reduction of Fine Wrinkles: It softens fine lines in sensitive areas such as around the eyes.
