12/01/2026What You Need to Know Before Getting a Hydrafacial: Preparation Guide for a Flawless Experience
The world's most popular skin care application Hydrafacial, is on everyone's radar with its promised "instant glow" and "deep cleansing" effect. Those smooth skins you see on social media and the dirty water coming out of the waste jar may be encouraging you to have this experience.
What You Need to Know Before Having a Hydrafacial
A Medical Procedure, Not Just a "Face Wash": Hydrafacial Truth
Hydrafacial is different from classic beauty salon treatments. Patented Vortex-Fusion® technology and applies medical grade acids (Glycolic and Salicylic Acid) to the skin. These acids peel the top layer of the skin (stratum corneum) in a controlled manner. Therefore, your skin should be ready for this peeling process. If your skin is already peeled or sensitized with other products, the acids of Hydrafacial may be too much for your skin. Therefore, the preparation process is as important as the procedure itself.
Before the Appointment: Preparing Your Skin for the Procedure (Pre-Care Protocol)
In the few days before your Hydrafacial appointment, you need to make some strategic changes to your home care routine.
When Should You Stop Using Retinol and Acid (AHA/BHA)?
Retinol (Vitamin A derivatives) and home peels (Glycolic acid, Lactic acid, etc.), which are indispensable in anti-aging routines, are products that thin and sensitize the skin. Since Hydrafacial is also an exfoliation (peeling) procedure, it overlaps with these products. To avoid “over-peeling” and irritation of your skin;
- Prescription Retinoic Acid (except Roaccutane etc.) creams: 5-7 days ago,
- Cosmetic Retinol serums: 3 days ago,
- AHA/BHA tonics: 3 days ago you have to let go.
Your skin should arrive at the appointment “rested” and with a calm barrier.
Timing with Botox and Fillers: The Critical 2 Week Rule
If you have recently had another procedure on your face, you should pay attention to the calendar. The Hydrafacial head works with vacuum (negative pressure) on the skin and creates a gentle massage effect on the surface.
- After Botox A freshly made Botox to have Hydrafacial after the application at least 10-14 days you should wait. If done prematurely, the vacuum effect can cause displacement of the toxin and problems such as droopy eyelids.
- After Filling Dermal fillers (lips, cheeks, chin), it is still necessary for the filling to integrate with the tissue. 2 weeks you must wait. Otherwise, the shape of the filling may be distorted.
Shaving Timing for Male Patients
For our male patients, Hydrafacial is an excellent treatment (especially for ingrowns). However, shaving clean-shaven on the day of the appointment can sensitize the skin and cause the solutions to burn. Shave before the procedure 24 hours ago or come with stubble to ensure the most comfortable experience.
What to Expect During the Process?
For those who will have Hydrafacial for the first time, the process is sometimes a matter of curiosity.
Is There Pain? The Feel of Vacuum Technology
No, Hydrafacial is absolutely painless. There are no needles, stinging or burning sensations. Our patients describe the movement of the vacuum head across the skin as a “cool, wet kiss” or a “textured cat tongue massage”. It is very relaxing and most patients fall asleep during the procedure.
"Gunkie Jar": You'll Be Surprised What Comes Out of Your Skin
The most satisfying part of the procedure is seeing the waste sump at the back of the device at the end of the session. You will see that the solutions that enter your skin as clear water come out as a cloudy, yellowish liquid with oil, dead skin, blackheads and makeup residue. This is tangible proof of cleanliness.
In Which Cases Hydrafacial Should Not Be Performed (Contraindications)
Not everyone can have this procedure. Some medical conditions require postponement.
Active Acne, Cold Sores and Open Wounds
Inflamed, cystic and very common on your face active acne If so, the vacuum process can spread bacteria to other parts of the face. In this case, medical acne treatment should be applied first, and after the acne dries, Hydrafacial should be done for scar and spot treatment. Likewise, if you have active herpes around the lips, you should postpone your appointment.
Shellfish Allergy: A Hidden Danger
This is a little known but vital detail. Some of Hydrafacial's original serums (especially Beta-HD) may contain ingredients derived from shellfish (Glucosamine HCl, etc.). If you are severely allergic to seafood such as shrimp, oysters, etc., you should definitely tell your doctor. In this case, the serums used in the protocol should be changed.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Is it Safe?
Hydrafacial is generally safe but the Salicylic Acid (BHA) used in the standard protocol is not recommended in high doses during pregnancy. Although the rate in Hydrafacial is very low, we Kadikoy‘We act with the principle of “zero risk” in our clinic in Istanbul, Turkey. For our pregnant patients, we apply special “Pregnant Protocols” that do not contain acid, only moisture and enzyme peeling. During breastfeeding, the standard procedure can be performed safely.
Genuine Device Warning: How to Avoid Fake Apps
There are thousands of Chinese devices on the market with names such as “Hydra-care”, “Aqua-peel”, etc., imitating Hydrafacial. These devices do not have the patented Vortex technology; they are just simple vacuums that spray water. The genuine Hydrafacial device has the “Hydrafacial MD” logo on it, the “Black Diamond” handpiece and the solutions are in single-use, bar-coded bottles. Feel free to ask what is applied to your skin.
Immediately After Transaction: First 24 Hours Rules
When you leave the clinic, you will have that famous glow called “Hydrafacial Glow”. To maintain this glow:
- Do not wash your face: Do not wash your face in the evening to allow the antioxidants and peptide serums to be absorbed.
- Do Not Wear Makeup Your pores are clean and open. Instead of immediately filling them with foundation, let the skin breathe.
- Protect from the Sun The skin is more sensitive to the sun as it is cleansed of dead skin. Always use SPF 50.
- No Sports and Sauna: Excessive sweating can burn or irritate freshly cleaned pores.
About the importance of sun protection and post-procedure care American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) also emphasizes the need to protect sensitive skin.
