12/09/2025Skin Care After Hydrafacial: Golden Rules to Maintain Your Radiance
You know that moment when you leave a Hydrafacial session: Your skin is cleaner, smoother, more hydrated and healthier than ever, with a healthy glow, as if it had been illuminated from within. This instant and impressive result makes Hydrafacial one of today's most popular medical skin treatments. However, getting the maximum benefit from this valuable investment and maintaining that gorgeous glow for as long as possible depends not only on the procedure performed in the clinic, but also on the right care routines you follow at home in the hours and days following the treatment.
Skin Care After Hydrafacial: Golden Rules to Maintain Your Radiance
Dr. Melis Ulger, Istanbul, Kadikoy‘I have prepared this guide to explain in full detail how to manage this critical process, which I always emphasize to my patients in my clinic in Istanbul, Turkey, by respecting the new and fresh state of your skin.
Immediately After Treatment: "Less is More" Philosophy (First 12 Hours)
After the Hydrafacial, your skin is saturated with nourishing and restorative serums and your pores are deeply purified. The main goal in these first hours is to allow the skin to absorb these valuable ingredients comfortably and protect the fresh, sensitized surface from external factors. The motto of this period is “less is more”.
What needs to be done:
Leave Your Skin Alone: Enjoy that radiant, slightly moisturized feeling on your skin. Your skin continues to absorb and process the powerful ingredients applied during the session, such as peptides, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid. It is best not to interfere with this process.
What Not to Do:
- Avoid Touching Your Face: Our hands unknowingly come into contact with many bacteria throughout the day. Touching cleaned and opened pores with our hands can transfer these bacteria and dirt to the skin, causing unwanted acne or irritation.
- Do Not Wear Makeup After treatment, avoid wearing makeup for at least the rest of the day, ideally until the next morning. Products such as foundation and powder can clog your cleaned pores again and prevent your skin from breathing.
- Avoid Intense Exercise, Sauna and Steam: Activities such as intense exercise, sauna or steam room can increase skin sensitivity and redness by increasing blood circulation and causing sweating. Avoiding such activities for the first 12-24 hours will help keep your skin calm.
- Do not take a hot shower: When washing your face or showering, use lukewarm water instead of hot water. Excessively hot water can weaken the skin's protective barrier and increase sensitivity.
First 24-48 hours: Transition to Gentle Care Routine
One day after the treatment, you can start a gentle skin care routine. During this period, the aim is to cleanse, moisturize and protect the skin without tiring it.
- Use a Gentle Cleanser: Choose a gentle cleanser that is sulfate-free, perfume-free and soap-free, instead of the foaming, scrub or aggressive cleansers you always use to cleanse your skin. Cleanse your skin with gentle movements, without rubbing, and after rinsing with lukewarm water, pat dry with a clean towel.
- The Art of Humidification: Although the hydrafacial gives your skin an intense moisture boost, it is important to lock this moisture into the skin. Use a fragrance-free moisturizer with simple but effective moisturizing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramide or glycerin. This will support the skin's barrier function and keep it glowing longer.
- Active Content to Avoid: This is one of the most critical issues after Hydrafacial. Since your skin has undergone a professional exfoliation and purification process, you should avoid any active ingredients that will cause extra fatigue or irritation for at least 2-3 days. The main ingredients you should avoid are:
- Retinoids (Retinol, Tretinoin): These powerful ingredients, which accelerate skin regeneration, can excessively dry and irritate skin that becomes sensitive after the procedure.
- AHA/BHA (Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Salicylic Acid): These acids create a chemical peeling effect. Since Hydrafacial already does this gently, using acids again can damage your skin.
- Benzoyl Peroxide: This ingredient used to treat acne can be quite drying.
- High Ratio Vitamin C Serums: While vitamin C is a great antioxidant, some highly concentrated formulations (especially L-Ascorbic Acid) can irritate sensitive skin post-procedure. Wait a few days to return to your routine.
Sun Protection: The Most Critical and Lifelong Step
If you had to follow only one rule for aftercare after a Hydrafacial, it would definitely be sun protection. After the treatment, the top layer of your skin has been renewed and fresh cells have come to the surface. This new and sensitive skin is extremely vulnerable to the harmful effects of UV rays. Inadequate sun protection not only leads to spotting (hyperpigmentation), but also negates the anti-aging effects of the treatment.
- Use Broad Spectrum SPF 30 (Ideally 50): Choose a product that protects against not only UVB but also UVA rays, which are responsible for skin aging.
- Choose Mineral Sunscreens: Especially in the first few days, mineral (physical) sunscreens containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide carry less risk of irritation than chemical sunscreens and are more suitable for sensitive skin.
- Apply Daily and in Sufficient Amount: Sunscreen should be used every day, not only in summer or when going outside, but even in cloudy weather and when sitting on the windowsill at home. The importance of this step to protect your skin Health authorities such as The Skin Cancer Foundation by the Turkish government.
Protecting Results in the Long Term: After Day 2
To get the most out of your Hydrafacial session is to see it as part of a long-term skin health plan.
- Slowly Get Back to Your Routines: After about 3 days, you can gradually reintroduce active ingredients such as retinol, AHA/BHA into your routine by observing the condition of your skin.
- Timing with Other Treatments: If Botox or dermal fillers If you are planning injectable procedures, it is recommended to have them at least 1-2 weeks before or after your Hydrafacial session. This allows time for each treatment to fully settle into the skin.
