The basic principle of laser hair removal is that the laser light is absorbed by the melanin (color pigment) in the hair root, converted into heat and destroys the root. However, each wavelength of light penetrates different depths of the skin and sees melanin at different rates.
- Short wavelengths (like Alexandrite) see melanin very strongly but cannot go deep. This is great for people with fair skin and dark hair, but risks burning the surface of the skin on darker skin.
- Longer wavelengths (such as Nd:YAG) see less melanin but go very deep. This is very safe for dark skin but may be less effective on fine hair.
